Colombia’s Foreign Minister, ECLAC’s Deputy Executive Secretary, UNFPA’s Regional Director and Other Senior Authorities Will Inaugurate Fifth Session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, Luis Gilberto Murillo; the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Javier Medina Vásquez; the Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Susana Sottoli; the Minister of Development Planning of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Sergio Cusicanqui; and the Ambassador-at-large of Honduras for Women’s Affairs and Chair of the 57th session of the Commission on Population and Development of the United Nations, Noemi Espinoza, will inaugurate the Fifth Session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development, to be held on July 3-4 at the Convention Center in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
At this event, senior representatives of government, regional and international institutions, the private sector, academia and civil society will address the achievements of the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development along with challenges for its implementation, 30 years after the adoption of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD). They will also analyze progress and challenges in relation to ensuring that persons with disabilities can fully exercise their rights.
In the context of this gathering, ECLAC will present a document entitled Population, Development and Rights in Latin America and the Caribbean, which constitutes the second regional report on the implementation of the Montevideo Consensus and which analyzes progress on implementation of the agreement’s priority measures, 11 years after its adoption.
The Fifth Session of the Regional Conference on Population and Development will be preceded on July 2 by side events and activities carried out by civil society.
The Conference is currently chaired by the Government of the Plurinational State of Bolivia and receives strategic support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
