Representatives of countries in the region will evaluate progress on and challenges to the implementation of the Montevideo Consensus as well as its synergy and complementarity with the 2030 Agenda at the Special Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Population and Development, which will be held November 7-9 at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago, Chile.

The meeting will be inaugurated by Raúl García-Buchaca, ECLAC’s Deputy Executive Secretary for Management and Programme Analysis; Patricia Chemor, Secretary General of the National Population Council (CONAPO) of Mexico, in her role as President of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean; and Esteban Caballero, Director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Regional Office.

Participants in the meeting will include ministers and government authorities from the member countries of the Regional Conference on Population and Development, as well as representatives of the United Nations system and civil society.

The special meeting will be held one year after the Third Meeting of the Presiding Officers of the Conference, which took place at ECLAC’s headquarters in October 2016.

At the gathering, a proposal on the indicators for regional follow-up of the Montevideo Consensus will be presented, and countries will disclose voluntary progress on their national reports and exchange good practices regarding implementation of the priority measures agreed upon in that document.

The Montevideo Consensus, adopted at the first meeting of the Regional Conference, held in 2013 in Uruguay, includes measures related to integrating the population in sustainable development and to the areas of childhood, adolescence and youth, aging, sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, internal and international migration, territorial inequality, and indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples.

During the meeting, participants will also analyze the synergy and complementarity of the Consensus with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other related agendas, including those of ECLAC’s subsidiary bodies.

In addition, they will define the place and date for the Third Meeting of the Regional Conference on Population and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Along with Mexico in the Presidency, the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference is comprised of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guyana, Honduras, Jamaica, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela.
